HISTORY OF

BIRD WOMAN FALLS

CHAPTER NAME

The historical source for the name choices are Let the Mountain Sing - Place Names of the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park by Jack Holterman published in 2003 by Jack Holterman originally published as Place Names of Glacier/Waterton National Parks by Jack Holterman 1985 Glacier Natural History Association.

Bird Woman Falls Chapter- Located in Glacier National Park, Montana, this magnificent scenic falls "refer to Sacajawea, the young Shoshoni mother who accompanied Lewis and Clark with her new-born baby Pompi. Her Hidatsa name may mean 'Bird Woman'" Some suggestions have also been made the name of the falls was made for someone else, perhaps the wife of Old Sun or the wife of Lone Walker of the Small Robes Band. Bird Woman, wife of Lone Walker, had a son Red Crow and daughters called Mink Woman and Fox Woman. Her son-in-law was the famed Hugh Monroe and she herself was a sister of Red Eagle. However, it can not be disputed that the falls themselves are a national treasure.
